There have been calls for new homes to be built in Newmarket after a controversial plan, submitted by Lord Derby,  for 400 homes was rejected by the Government, despite initially being approved by the local council.

Local campaigners against the proposed development argued that the development at Hatchfield Farm would have a negative impact on the racing industry, and result in major traffic problems for the town.

The local council now says it’s time to think about and plan for the town’s future.

Lord Derby meanwhile, who was expecting to make millions from the housing plan, is now reflecting on where his next meal will come from. It is not thought that he will be visiting the local food bank as a result however.
