Newmarket Today – 13th September 2026 Edition

๐Ÿ‡ NEWMARKET โ€” What’s Happening This Week

Sunday 6 September 2026

Newmarket has just had a very distinctive weekend: yesterday’s Grenadier Guards Freedom of the Town ceremony was followed by a military concert at Tattersalls. Now the town’s attention turns towards the autumn racing season and the Henry Cecil Open Weekend.

๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ Latest Local News & Developments

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Grenadier Guards โ€” Freedom of Newmarket

Saturday 12 September, 11amโ€“1pm

๐Ÿ“ Newmarket War Memorial โ†’ Tattersalls Sales Ring

This is an unusually significant local civic event.

The Grenadier Guards are being granted the Freedom of the Town of Newmarket, reflecting the regiment’s historic connection with the town and the Royal Family’s long association with Newmarket.

The programme currently includes:

11:00โ€“11:25am โ€” parade forms up at the War Memorial and marches via the High Street and The Avenue to Tattersalls.

11:30โ€“11:45am โ€” inspection and presentation of the Freedom Scroll at Tattersalls Further Paddock.

12 noonโ€“1pm โ€” military concert inside the Tattersalls Sales Ring.

๐Ÿ‡ Newmarket Racing

Cesarewitch Trial Day

Saturday 19 September

๐Ÿ“ Newmarket Racecourse โ€” Rowley Mile

This is the opening meeting of Newmarket’s autumn racing season.

  • Gates: 11:50am
  • First race: 1:50pm
  • Last race: 5:30pm
  • Seven-race card
  • Feature: Cesarewitch Trial
  • Tickets from ยฃ18
  • Under-18s free with a responsible adult

This is the first really important date to put in the racing diary.

๐Ÿด Henry Cecil Open Weekend

19โ€“20 September

This remains one of the most interesting Newmarket weekends of the year.

It offers behind-the-scenes access to the racing industry, including participating yards and equestrian activities, and ties in with the opening weekend of autumn racing.

Status: CONFIRMED.

This is the event I’d particularly recommend to anyone interested in seeing what Newmarket’s racing industry actually looks like behind the racecourse. The Henry Cecil Open Weekend offers visitors a rare chance to go behind the scenes at Britain’s racing yards and meet people involved in the industry. It coincides with the Cesarewitch Trial on Saturday.

๐Ÿ‡ Cambridgeshire Meeting

24โ€“26 September

๐Ÿ“ Newmarket Racecourse โ€” Rowley Mile

Three days of major autumn racing:

Thursday 24 Sept โ€” Cambridgeshire Thursday
Friday 25 Sept โ€” Cambridgeshire Friday
Saturday 26 Sept โ€” Cambridgeshire Saturday

Friday features the Rockfel Stakes and Joel Stakes, while Saturday is the big finale.

The Friday card runs:

  • Gates 11:15am
  • First race 1:15pm
  • Last race 4:45pm
  • Tickets from ยฃ18
  • Under-18s free with responsible adult

๐ŸŽ Cambridgeshire Race Day Tour

Saturday 26 September

For anyone who wants the full Newmarket experience, this is particularly interesting.

The day starts at 8:15am on Warren Hill, while racehorses are exercising, followed by breakfast, a visit to the National Stud, and behind-the-scenes access to the Rowley Mile including the Parade Ring, Commentary Box, Weighing Room and Royal Box.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ ยฃ110 including Premier Racing ticket
๐Ÿ‘ค 12+

This is probably one of the best single-day ways to understand why Newmarket is genuinely different from an ordinary racing town.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Markets & Town Centre

the regular town market continues on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

West Suffolk Makers Market

The next special makers market is Saturday 12 September, so that has just taken place.

The big market-related date coming up is:

๐ŸŒญ Newmarket Sausage Festival

Saturday 26 September, 10amโ€“3pm
๐Ÿ“ Market Square, Newmarket
๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ FREE

This annual event features food producers, live entertainment, cookery demonstrations, the Sausage Dog Competition, Sausage Pan Races and family activities.

This remains one of the best free, genuinely local events in the Newmarket calendar.

๐Ÿš— Roads, Parking & Travel

For the coming weekend, the major issue will be increased traffic around the Rowley Mile because of both the Cesarewitch Trial and Henry Cecil Open Weekend.

The following weekend is potentially even busier because of the Cambridgeshire Meeting + Sausage Festival combination.

So if you’re travelling into Newmarket on 19 or 26 September, I’d allow extra time.

๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Newmarket Weather

The weather is looking very similar to Ely: warm today and Monday, another reasonably warm spell Tuesday, then a marked change to cooler conditions from Wednesday.

For the Cesarewitch Trial next Saturday, the current forecast is still too far out to be dependable, but Saturday is presently expected to be around the low 20s with plenty of cloud. That will need checking again later in the week before making firm outdoor plans.
