Newmarket Today – 6th September 2026 Edition
π NEWMARKET β What’s Happening This Week
Sunday 6 September 2026
Newmarket is now heading towards the autumn racing season, with the Cesarewitch Trial on 19 September and the Cambridgeshire Meeting on 24β26 September looming large.
But there is plenty happening before then β including a major civic event involving the Grenadier Guards.
ποΈ Latest Local News & Developments
π’ Studlands Park Community Centre gets new management
West Suffolk Council announced on 4 September that Newmarket Nexus is taking over management of Studlands Community Centre.
The council describes this as a new chapter for the community hub, which provides an important local venue for residents and community organisations.
Status: CONFIRMED and already underway.
ποΈ West Suffolk’s new Local Plan
West Suffolk Council says more than 300 sites have been submitted through its recent “call for sites” for possible inclusion in the next Local Plan. These sites are now being assessed.
This is a district-wide process rather than a Newmarket-only decision, so it should not be interpreted as 300 new development sites being approved. It is an early-stage assessment of potential sites.
I’ll keep an eye on this because future site allocations could have significant implications for Newmarket and the surrounding villages.
π¬π§ Grenadier Guards β Freedom of Newmarket
Saturday 12 September, 11amβ1pm
π Newmarket War Memorial β Tattersalls Sales Ring
This is an unusually significant local civic event.
The Grenadier Guards are being granted the Freedom of the Town of Newmarket, reflecting the regiment’s historic connection with the town and the Royal Family’s long association with Newmarket.
The programme currently includes:
11:00β11:25am β parade forms up at the War Memorial and marches via the High Street and The Avenue to Tattersalls.
11:30β11:45am β inspection and presentation of the Freedom Scroll at Tattersalls Further Paddock.
12 noonβ1pm β military concert inside the Tattersalls Sales Ring.
Status: CONFIRMED.
This is probably the most unusual Newmarket event next weekend, and much more distinctive than a generic entertainment listing.
π Newmarket Racing
Cesarewitch Trial Day
Saturday 19 September
π Newmarket Racecourse β Rowley Mile
This is the opening meeting of Newmarket’s autumn racing season.
- Gates: 11:50am
- First race: 1:50pm
- Last race: 5:30pm
- Seven-race card
- Feature: Cesarewitch Trial
- Tickets from Β£18
- Under-18s free with a responsible adult
This is the first really important date to put in the racing diary.
π΄ Henry Cecil Open Weekend
19β20 September
This remains one of the most interesting Newmarket weekends of the year.
It offers behind-the-scenes access to the racing industry, including participating yards and equestrian activities, and ties in with the opening weekend of autumn racing.
Status: CONFIRMED.
This is the event I’d particularly recommend to anyone interested in seeing what Newmarket’s racing industry actually looks like behind the racecourse.
π Cambridgeshire Meeting
24β26 September
π Newmarket Racecourse β Rowley Mile
Three days of major autumn racing:
Thursday 24 Sept β Cambridgeshire Thursday
Friday 25 Sept β Cambridgeshire Friday
Saturday 26 Sept β Cambridgeshire Saturday
Friday features the Rockfel Stakes and Joel Stakes, while Saturday is the big finale.
The Friday card runs:
- Gates 11:15am
- First race 1:15pm
- Last race 4:45pm

π Cambridgeshire Race Day Tour
Saturday 26 September
For anyone who wants the full Newmarket experience, this is particularly interesting.
The day starts at 8:15am on Warren Hill, while racehorses are exercising, followed by breakfast, a visit to the National Stud, and behind-the-scenes access to the Rowley Mile including the Parade Ring, Commentary Box, Weighing Room and Royal Box.
ποΈ Β£110 including Premier Racing ticket
π€ 12+
This is probably one of the best single-day ways to understand why Newmarket is genuinely different from an ordinary racing town.
ποΈ Markets & Town Centre
πΊ Newmarket Antiques & Collectors Fair
Sunday 6 September, 8amβ4pm
π Newmarket
This is a substantial event rather than a little antiques market:
- Trade/early-bird entry: 8am, Β£7
- General public: 9:30am, Β£4
- Under-16s accompanied by an adult: free
- Last entry: 3:30pm
- Closes: 4pm
It covers furniture, ceramics, jewellery, watches, art, vintage clothing, toys, collectables and much more.
Status: CONFIRMED.
ποΈ Newmarket Makers Market
Saturday 12 September, 9amβ3pm
π Market Square car park
The second-Saturday-of-the-month market brings together independent makers, bakers and creators from across the region, plus food.
π΄ National Horseracing Museum
Clippety Clop
Friday 11 September, 10:15am
π National Horseracing Museum
A creative-play session for 18-month to 4-year-olds, featuring stories, songs, collage, drawing and Orson the Horse.
Places are limited to 15 children and advance booking is essential.
π¬ Music & Entertainment
π΅ OASIS β Don’t Look Back in Anger
Friday 11 September, 8pm
π Kings Cinema, 16 Fitzroy Street, Newmarket
A film documenting the Oasis reunion and Live ’25 tour, with rehearsal, backstage and performance footage.
This is not a live Oasis concert, obviously, but it is the most clearly confirmed music-focused event I’ve found locally for the coming week.
π Roads, Parking & Travel
I haven’t found a new Newmarket-specific major road closure that needs a headline warning this Sunday.
One useful practical point if you’re visiting Newmarket: council car parks accept cash, card or RingGo, and the council specifically directs visitors to one.network for current roadworks and event-related closures.
With the Grenadier Guards event next Saturday involving a parade from the War Memorial to Tattersalls, I’d expect some temporary traffic management around the High Street/The Avenue route. I’ve treated that as an expected event consequence rather than claiming a specific road closure that I haven’t been able to verify.
π¦οΈ Newmarket Weather
Newmarket has a very similar week to Ely: warm and pleasant today, then cooler from Tuesday, with a little rain Tuesday and another potentially wetter spell Friday.
For outdoor events, today and Monday look particularly attractive. Next Saturday’s Grenadier Guards parade is currently too far out for a highly reliable detailed forecast, so that’s one to check again later in the week.
