Newmarket Today – 1st September 2026 Edition
π NEWMARKET β What’s Happening This Week
Newmarket is coming out of National Racehorse Week, and attention is now turning towards the autumn racing season, with the Cesarewitch Trial and Henry Cecil Open Weekend just three weeks away.
ποΈ Latest Local News & Developments
π National Racehorse Week
The 22β31 August National Racehorse Week programme is now reaching its conclusion. The week has given visitors access to racing yards, studs and other parts of the industry that aren’t normally open to the public.
For Newmarket, this is particularly significant because it reinforces the town’s position as the UK’s principal racing centre.
π A14 reminder
There was a significant incident on the A14 near Exning earlier this week, with two lanes closed and severe delays after a collision.
The incident itself has cleared, but it’s a useful reminder that the A14 around Newmarket/Exning remains the key route to keep an eye on when travelling into or out of town.

π Newmarket β racing yards and Rowley Mile
This is potentially the most interesting event in Newmarket over the next month.
The weekend gives visitors the opportunity to go behind the scenes at some of Britain’s best-known racing yards and meet people involved in the industry.
Sunday includes:
- Access to participating racing yards
- Shetland Pony Grand National
- Show jumping involving racing personalities
- Parade of retired racehorses
- Fun dog show
It coincides with racing at the Rowley Mile on Saturday.

The evening includes live matches, stories, audience games and opportunities for larger groups to get involved.
This is a nice example of Newmarket Racecourses increasingly being used for non-racing entertainment as well.

π΅ Live Music
One particularly interesting confirmed event is at Newmarket Kings Theatre:
πΆ A Musical Evening with Friends
24β26 September
Nomads present an intimate evening of songs ranging from modern favourites and classics to musical theatre, with material spanning West End and Broadway.
That’s worth flagging because, unlike the racecourse’s big summer concerts, it is a proper local theatre/music event.
π Looking Ahead: Cambridgeshire Meeting

π Rowley Mile, Newmarket
The big autumn meeting features three days of racing and Oktoberfest celebrations.
Saturday includes the Cheveley Park Stakes and Middle Park Stakes, while the Cambridgeshire itself is the meeting’s historic centrepiece.

There is also a particularly interesting Cambridgeshire Race Day Tour:
Meet 8:15am

π€ Suitable for 12+
It includes Warren Hill, breakfast, the National Stud and behind-the-scenes access to the Rowley Mile before the day’s racing.
π Newmarket Sausage Festival
Saturday 26 September, 10amβ3pm

This is one of Newmarket’s most entertaining annual events.
The 2026 programme includes:
- Live entertainment
- Artisan food and drink
- A Cookery Theatre
- Sausage Dog Competition
- Sausage Pan Races
- Best Flavoured Sausage Roll Competition
- Family activities
This could be one of the best free family days out in Newmarket next month.
ποΈ Markets
Newmarket Antiques Fair
Sunday 6 September
The major antiques/vintage event is the standout market-related event coming up.
West Suffolk Makers Market
Saturday 12 September
Local makers, food and crafts.
Regular Newmarket Market continues on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
π§ Roads & Transport
The most significant current issue remains the A14, particularly around Exning/Newmarket, where incidents can cause severe delays. The recent collision illustrates how quickly the main east-west route can be affected.
Remember the autumn racing calendar brings substantially larger visitor numbers into town.
β Newmarket β My Picks
π Most uniquely Newmarket: Henry Cecil Open Weekend β 19β20 Sept
π― Something completely different: Gary Anderson darts β 17 Sept
πΊ Best for collectors: Antiques & Vintage Fair β 6 Sept
π Best cultural evening: La Traviata β 3 Sept
πΈ Best local music: A Musical Evening with Friends β 24β26 Sept
π Best free family event: Newmarket Sausage Festival β 26 Sept
π Biggest racing event coming up: Cambridgeshire Meeting β 24β26 Sept
Overall: Newmarket is entering a much more interesting phase of its calendar. The summer’s big concerts are over, but September is arguably more distinctive: the Henry Cecil Open Weekend, Cesarewitch Trial, darts night, Cambridgeshire Meeting and Sausage Festival give the town a very broad programme.
And if I had to pick just one thing to investigate further next week, it would be the Henry Cecil Open Weekend, because the access to racing yards is genuinely unusual rather than simply another day at the racecourse.
